    Agreed with this episode when I first heard it… still agree today. I’ve been so focused on my primary business in the past 2.5 years that I’ve only had time to write a stunning total of four blog posts about it, haha. Good thing I wasn’t trying to build a “follow my entrepreneurial journey!” audience.

    Actually I’ve journaled a ton about the progress of my biz, just not online. There are so many ideas / strategies / random thoughts / experiments in the early years that it seems all incoherent, and I figured nobody wants to read that shit when I don’t have my own business nailed and scaled yet :-p

    Hey Shayna been cool to follow your progress, can’t believe you listened to the first one as well! Pretty cool :)

    I’m a big fan of journaling too, actually probably a bit too much. Last year I was writing 1000 words a day about random shaz going on, now I’m practicing writing about 50 to 100 every morning about the shape of the day, then trying to focus those creative bursts on things that might be of use to some others! We’ll see how that goes :)

    Great points.

    I’d also like to add that I think this whole “networking” thing is overrated. I mean, I agree that having connections helps, my point is more about how people try to build those connections. I’d guess that going to a conference would be much more effective way to build connections than blogging, tweeting, etc. Especially when you consider how distracting social media can be (opportunity cost: you could be working on your business instead of tweeting for hours on end).Yet everyone seems to be crazy about weak ties (“I exchanged a couple of tweets with (insert big name)!”).

    I think that most online communications are the relationships equivalent of junk food : exchanging blog comments (the irony), tweets, and e-mails may feel like you are being social but in fact you are just sitting in your room in front of a computer screen reading bits and pieces of text someone typed.

    I’m not saying that relationships can’t start out this way, but if we are honest with ourselves, how many of our “connections” have escalated to at least a Skype call (not chat), much less meeting in person? Unless you are consciously escalating the relationship this whole “networking” is a waste of time.

    I hate to see people spending tons of time and energy on this vague “networking” thing when they’d get much better results by focusing on building their businesses and occasionally meeting people in person.

    I also agree with the idea that the best way to network is to build something impressive. It seems to me that often people who are just starting out try to network in hopes that this connection or that connection will open doors and make things happen. They’d probably be much better off by focusing on their businesses.

    P.S. I quit Facebook in 2012. Never looked back. I came back to Twitter recently to “network” (what was I thinking?). I’ll probably quit Twitter again sometime soon. Social media is such a waste of time and energy.

    P.P.S. I’m only talking about personal use of social media, not about the business use. Although I’m sceptical about that as well since once I had access to Twitter account with around 45 000 followers and it *maybe* drove 50-100 uniques to the site everytime we’d share a link. Made me agree with Derek Halpern’s remark that if your audience is on social media, you don’t have to be, because they will share your content anyway.

    Thanks so much for putting this up again. I heard this when it first aired, but really got so much out of it the second time around.

    There are many gems within this episode, and I feel like much of it goes well beyond blogging and can easily be applied to other aspects of business.

    Big believer in the TMBA approach to bragging to friends and family about what you’re doing before you have anything to show for it–DON’T DO IT. I think there’s a lot of truth to the notion that you start to feed on the emotional rewards of talking about it instead of what’s actually happening in your business. A lot of people look at your success and disagree…but they probably didn’t read your post on podcasting where you mention that you went 2 YEARS before taking your thoughts public.

    Brian it’s embarrassing to look back at all my talk and realize that I’m the prototypical example of how bark and bite relate to each other :)

    Yeah, when I’m confident about what I’m up to I’m generally not going around trying to convince those who aren’t particularly interested in it in the first place.

    Agree RE: networking generally. It’s a nice complement to the work, but nothing without it. Can’t quit Twitter I absolutely love it for link discovery and interacting with publishers.

    At first, this episode made me mad. Especially b/c I am still in my first 1000 days on my journey since escaping the Corporate Matrix.

    Then, it started to make more sense. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with creating a blog, ESPECIALLY if it gets you into the daily/weekly practice of writing. Becoming a better writer is never a bad thing. However, as has been said many times before – a blog is not a business.

    However, since launching my site and becoming more active on other blogs via comments, I have forged new relationships that have accelerated my progress on some biz goals.

    So – is there not inherent value in that part of establishing a digital presence? Showing that you’re doing the work, figuring out how to forge relationships online and are “putting yourself out there?”

    This is a controversial topic, for sure! But if some people need to put in the reps (rehashing other blogs, content) in order to get to a place of “adjacent possible” (credit Cal Newport) within their industry, then I would still say that’s worth it!

    you Mike! Yeah ya know I can understand why this can be touchy subject… if I were to re-do this post in 2014, I’d probably say something like “do all your writing under an authority brand (that you own) with a high quality conception.”

    So yeah, if one chooses to write a run of the mill journey blog it’s better than nothing, but it’s not better than writing an authority blog etc, assuming the goal is to leverage the blog for income/authority/opportunities/etc.
